kady & david// film noir inspired Seattle engagement

2017-09-29_0003.jpgAhmagah you guys, it’s been three weeks since we peeked our little heads up into the blog and shared some of the good shit we’ve been working on! We’ve been in Europe and Morocco for the last two weeks, getting our heads together after this year. 40 weddings, 50 engagements, a little commercial work here and there, and Moveable Feast Yucatan all meant that finishing our 2017 season felt a little like limping across a finish line. Nothing a good night’s sleep in our favorite city Bordeaux and a heavy pour of vin rouge can’t fix, and I wanted to leap back into sharing stuff with one of my favorite shoots of the year: Kady and David, two little hot tamales who were down for whatever we wanted to create for their engagement photos. Lemme tell you about them.

Ok, pause: it’s not that I have anything against light and airy photography PER SE. It’s just… not for me. At all. And to have couples who not only hear me when I say “I’m imagining a film noir inspired shoot and you two looking cinematic as helllll,” but RUN with us to make that happen, I could just about cry. This shoot came together for three specific reasons:

  1. Kady and David are down ass people who are down to traipse through rainy alleys and homeless encampments and prison parking lots to get the shots we want. In short, they’re our kind of people.
  2. As we plotted this shoot, we knew we needed some other pros to get their mitts on it. The styling here is all thanks to Sweet Kelly Anne Styling, who makes high fashion happen on the strictest of budgets. Kady told me she was “super casual in real life,” but Kelly has a way of making the right outfit happen at the right time and is fun to hang with no less. Some people have it all. Also, the makeup was thanks to our girl Kenzie, who has been our go-to for so many faces ever since we first collabed on a styled shoot in 2015. She’s never heavy handed and always a dream.
  3. These images exist PERIOD because of the emergency memory card loan of the amazing Megan Nealy Photography. She tagged along on this shoot as part of the mentor session we were doing with her that day aaaaand GUESS WHAT, we literally had no memory cards in all five cameras. This has never happened to us in the entirety of our careers, I wanted to crawl into a hole and die, she saved our asses. Check her out, she’s insanely talented and amazing and we owe her big time.

So there you have it. A filmy shoot in the last light of a drizzly Seattle autumn day with the dream team, and exactly the kind of thing we dream of shooting when people are down to get weird.

Ugh. Instagram captions. What the hell?

I've spent countless moments of my life staring at a blank instagram caption box. Try something - delete it. Put a quote in there - delete it. But I had a secret weapon... I'd just hand the phone to my wife. She's is a witty and wise firestorm of a woman and I love her for it. Apparently, so does instagram. Her irreverent, meandering, and poignant-as-hell captions have created a sense of community in our lives so that everywhere we travel, there’s usually someone willing to show us around (not to mention insta alone has literally put thousands of dollars in our bank account). So I made her sit down and explain what goes through her curly little head whenever her thumbs click away at her phone keyboard. Put your email below for her free guide on how to write insta captions that people actually care about and make the whole process (dare we say it) fun.. -Tim
