When Brittany saw Hollis striding toward her on their first date, all long legs long hair long love story ahead of them, she thought “SHITTTTT I’m in trouble.” We wormed our way into their lives when I developed a little instagram crush on these two, thanks to our girl Gaylin sharing their gorgeous faces and sweet spirits. I wanted to photograph them sooo bad…. and a year later when they emailed us asking about their wedding (THEIR WEDDING!!), I did a jig in the car and started planning their Seattle engagement shoot.
So meet Hollis. Meet Brittany.
These beautiful faces mask private souls. They’ve gone through some shit. They play their cards close to their chests… except when they don’t. And when their little sparks of sharing come through, I’ll be damned if you don’t want to move heaven and earth to make everything in their paths smooth for them.
I want to sing this story from the Seattle rooftops but I also want to respect the times that aren’t my story to tell. So turning the mic over to Hollis:
“I think people want to believe that in 2018 couples like us aren’t touched by homophobia and racism, but it’s simply not true–whether it’s blatant things from families, subtle and unexpected microaggressions from friends, or other stuff from different communities… it’s real. BUT we are in love and beyond blessed to have found each other and are committed to focusing on our joy and the special people in our lives that add to it. And that’s why we just love those fucking photos so much because they really capture how much love and passion we have, and resistance we have to anything that stands in the way of us getting to express that.”
Meeting these two has been a swift stroke of kismet in our lives, another sign that the right couples find us at the right time, that nothing needs to be forced or fake when it comes to your photos or your relationship with your photographer. It should all flow from the same well.
Even being back on the train tracks in SODO, in a little spot we’ve always wanted to photograph and where we found out later was the scene of an incredible turning point in Hollis’ life… it’s just crazy how some things are meant to be.
Like these two.
One of my favorite shoots of all time. Cannot wait to be witness to the long, beautiful, fierce lives they have to create together.
