Two years ago, one of our best friends was riding a wave of success: a VP at her major corporation, corner office downtown, on track to become a vested partner, and a 30-something hour work schedule that would honestly make most entrepreneurs completely faint from envy. And despite my “no FOMO” policy, despite being really […]

Back in his tender youth, Tim was dead-set on going to university in New Zealand. His application was en route to the post office when his sweet mom offhandedly said “well, this is THIS week’s dream.” He was crushed– what do you mean, THIS WEEK? This is the only path for me! I’m becoming a […]

It’s been 3 months and I’m not as booked as I want to be. I think I should apply for jobs again. The most talented designer I know just texted me. Last year, she got downsized out of her cushy job churning out corporate-y logo designs and taking three gin & tonics to the face […]

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.” -Steve Jobs When is the last time we really examined our ideas about quitting? I mean really dug into what we believe about commitment and purpose? When Tim and I first got married, I was in grad school for a degree that I knew I should […]

I have a dear friend who sells Spiritual Grounding services. She helps her clients begin to answer the question, “what the hell am I doing here?” What do you get when you work with her? — Deeper contentment and direction in life. A sense of Spiritual Grounding is actually super important. Psychologists say that if […]

Let’s go back in time for a second— to a more innocent time, long ago. The year was 2015: when Jon Snow was thought to be dead and Adele was in California dreaming about who she used to be. Hotline Bling blasted from radios and only the coolest of cools knew about how the 10 […]

“Wealth, like happiness, is never attained when sought after directly. It comes as a by-product of providing a useful service.” -Henry Ford One of our mentorship clients laid some realness down on us the other day: “Every time I raise my prices, I feel guilty.” WHOAHHH, if that isn’t something to write about in your […]

Sweet, sweet aunt Hilda. She always means so well: has the butterscotch candies stocked and is ready to teach you needlepoint whenever you ask. But you tell her you’re running a business, and suddenly she becomes an expert on how you should do it– and FYI you’re doing it wrong. Your prices are too high. […]

Our friend Tyson is trying to get the acronym DTF to replace the “outdated” phrase “down to clown” because clowns are gross. Example: Me: You guys wanna grab a burger? Tyson: I’m DTF! So by Tyson’s definition, I’m DTF for most things except for one: karaoke. No. I’ll be damned if I have to listen […]

Ladies. Listen- we need to talk about something I hear in our mentoring sessions all the time: “I want to charge for my work, but I feel like I’m asking too much. Like I’m being too aggressive. Like it’s bitchy to ask for more money.” These are women who are killing their game, have clients, […]

What’s it like to put on your favorite sweater? That kind of comfort doesn’t just happen… It takes time. Your brand can feel the same to your customers if you keep it consistent, cohesive, and compelling. The feel of your brand is absolutely pivotal for a trustworthy and sustainable business. But how do you get […]

You know how we all love Beyonce to an unhealthy degree? (Don’t even try to debate this in the comments, I see you! People who say they don’t like her are fundamentally lying to themselves, I believe this deep in my soul). I think about Beyonce’s customer service a lottttttt: there’s a clear and direct […]

I got a DM last week from a friend telling me he’s starting a new business and wants to know where to get a logo and some business cards (“and like, probably a cool 30 second video with some drone footage or something”, he added). Let me start by saying: I get it. Visualizing how […]

“We had a deal that we’d trade photos for lawn mowing, but he didn’t mow my lawn. How do I tell him nicely that photos are cancelled?” (THIS IS A REAL QUESTION WE HEARD RECENTLY. WHAT. THE. FUCK.)
Laaaaaadiesssss. Sweet angels. Sit down. We need to talk. Why is it, that whenever we get all […]

A year ago Saturday, Tim and I pulled on our fancy pants, invited everyone over for a champagne-soaked bash and launched Sullivan & Sullivan for the very first time. So today is kind of like our birthday. *First of all, ok, we’re not really one year old. We spent two years as Lightworks360 and I […]

I grew up with a man who walked me to the bus stop every morning before school and waited with me in the chilly air. We’d play catch in the pre-dawn light, he’d hear about all my neighbor friends’ favorite boy bands, and he’d kiss me goodbye as I boarded the bus to school. I […]

Ugh. Instagram captions. What the hell?

I've spent countless moments of my life staring at a blank instagram caption box. Try something - delete it. Put a quote in there - delete it. But I had a secret weapon... I'd just hand the phone to my wife. She's is a witty and wise firestorm of a woman and I love her for it. Apparently, so does instagram. Her irreverent, meandering, and poignant-as-hell captions have created a sense of community in our lives so that everywhere we travel, there’s usually someone willing to show us around (not to mention insta alone has literally put thousands of dollars in our bank account). So I made her sit down and explain what goes through her curly little head whenever her thumbs click away at her phone keyboard. Put your email below for her free guide on how to write insta captions that people actually care about.
